Can Brock Bowers win the Heisman Trophy?
By Max Tolbert
Can Brock Bowers win the Heisman Trophy? This question by many casuals would be scoffed at and never really thought about. A tight end has never won the award and rarely ever goes to anybody other than Quarterback and Running back. But I think many in the fan base can make the argument that Bowers is one of the few players that should be considered for the award.
Georgia announced the players that will be going to SEC media days. Bowers, usually a reserved, quiet guy, sort of surprised some that he was picked. But I think the program and Kirby picked him to give him a little bit of a spotlight. No player on the Georgia team I think deserves more recognition than Bowers. But I also think they picked Bowers because this is the start of his Heisman campaign that will last all season long.
Let’s not get into stats, let’s just start off with who has been Georgia’s best player for the past two years. If you take the top five players of 2021 and 2022 Bowers has to be somewhere in the top 5. Honestly, on the offensive side of the ball, I believe he was the best player in the past two seasons. Bowers is not only the best player on that side of the ball but he is also the most important. When he is going, so is the Dawgs offense and I would expect the same if not more reliance on Bowers this upcoming season.
You can also compare his stats to Kyle Pitts who was in the Heisman conversion during the 2020 season at Florida. Pitts was also selected 4th overall in that year’s draft. Florida fans always want to compare Bowers to Pitts on social media. If you look into the stats, Bowers already has more receiving yards and touchdowns in two years. If in 2020 people were talking about Pitts as a Heisman-worthy player, so should Bowers. Also, Bowers might be picked higher. All of these facts hurt Florida fans’ feelings for some reason. Poor Florida fans can’t even use the #1980 jokes anymore.
As I said, It is hard for any other position to win the Heisman other than running backs and Quarterbacks. Devonta Smith won the Heisman in 2020 and put up ridiculous stats. Bowers especially in this current system will not put up monstrous numbers like Smith did.
Bowers Is one of the most dominant players in all of CFB
Bowers won the Mackey Award last year, an award given out to the best Tight End in the country, after being snubbed during his Freshman campaign. Without any doubt, Bowers is the best player at his position this season. That gives a little more credence to the argument that he should be in the Heisman race. But, Bowers might be the best overall player in the country. He has been one of the most imposing offensive weapons in all of CFB the past two seasons. Most opposing defensive coordinators gameplan on how to stop Bowers, but yet he seems to blow up their plans every time. Of course, I’m not a Heisman voter, But given that he is one of the more dominant players in the CFB that should be one of the considerations.
But isn’t the Heisman given to the best player on the best team? Usually how it goes. If you look at Georgia’s 2023 schedule they should once again look to be in the mix for the playoffs. I do not want to jinx anything, but I believe the Dawgs could easily be in the CFP Playoff once again and could play in the Title game. Should Bowers have some big games throughout the year he should be in the conversation. Also, like many of the big games Georgia has played in the past few years, Bowers has shown up. Expect the same, especially against Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. If the Georgia 2023 campaign goes the way it is supposed to go, then I think Bowers will be in the conservation.
