SEC media Days to Go to Dallas
By Max Tolbert
I hate change. I hate change, especially in College Football. Even the slightest amount of change bothers me. This morning as I’m watching SEC Media Day coverage, Greg Sankey ruined my day.
Sankey made the announcement today that the traveling circus that is SEC Media Days will be going to Dallas in 2024.
For as long as I can remember the event was always held in Hoover, Alabama. That was the tradition, so no big deal. Then it moved to Atlanta a few times and was held at the College Football Hall of Fame. It seemed like the event was bigger when it was held in Atlanta.
But with the recent news that it is moving to Dallas, this shows really where we are at the current time in CFB. With the SEC adding Oklahoma and Texas, it is really more about lining the pockets of the conferences and fighting over TV markets.
Dallas is one of the bigger markets in America and this is the SEC showing off its reach to all of the other Power 5 conferences.
It feels odd to have SEC Media Days west of the Mississippi River. The era of college football that we are used to is completely changing in front of our eyes. While it is changing and shifting, we should all take a mental image of where we are in history.
CFB will never be the same again, conferences are becoming massive and regions do not matter. Playoffs are being expanded and players are getting paid. In some cases, change is good. Players getting paid is the right thing to do, but of course, nobody can agree on how the system should work. It seems like every change that has happened or will happen are good on paper but in actuality, we opened Pandora’s box.
Also, the TV channels that we grew accustomed to are changing. CBS is in its final year broadcasting the 3:30 game for the SEC and the SEC Championship. It is bittersweet that this is coming to a close. I have some great memories of hearing that SEC on CBS theme song and watching some of the greatest games of this century unfold. But on the other hand, it is nice not to hear Gary Danielson’s voice anymore. I think all SEC fan bases can agree on that.
SEC Media Days moving around is part of the change. Many of you reading this probably won’t even care about the event or where it is held, but it is always fun to watch because I know football is around the corner. I hate changes and I hate change, especially in College Football, tradition matters.
So if you are watching SEC on CBS or at Georgia vs Mizzou game this year, be mindful of what you are seeing. Take a mental picture of it. One day when you are telling your grandkids about the good old days they won’t believe you when you say “You know Vandy and Georgia used to play every year”.
