Frank Sinkwich Halfback (1940-1943) Heisman Trophy 1942: Frank Sinkwhich was considered one of the greatest athletes of his time. Born in 1920 Sinkwich hailed from Youngstown, Ohio. Wally Butts recruited him to play at Georgia where he would go on and become a two-time All-American and break several NCAA records. Sinkwich in 1941 ran for a nation-leading 1,103 yards and set the NCAA single-season record of total yards in a season with 2,187 yards. In 1942. Sinkiwich with his backfield mate, Charley Trippi led the Bulldogs to an 11-1 record earning them an SEC Championship and a bid to play in the Rose Bowl against U.C.L.A. Georgia did go on to win the game 9-0. Sinwich was hurt and was not able to play much of the game. Wally Butts put him in the game to score the winning touchdown. Georgia took home its first-ever national title. Sinkwich would become the 1st pick in the 1943 NFL draft to the Detroit Lions and become NFL MVP in 1944.
