Georgia football: Recap of Kirby Smarts Fall camp presser
By Max Tolbert
The start of fall camp for Georgia Football means the start of Kirby Smarts press conferences.
Kirby met with the media on Wednesday to kick off the start of fall camp. There wasn’t anything big that happened at the presser. More or less, it was the standard press conference.
Kirby did say he was excited for the start of the camp. After this offseason, many can understand why. Given how this offseason has unfolded, anyone wants football to start.
Smart did say the key to the QB competition is seeing where their feet are. Showing composure and being able to not get overwhelmed will be the biggest factor in winning the job.
Carson Beck looks to be that guy. Smart said that Beck is extremely even-keeled. In order to be a great QB, one definitely has to be cool, calm, and collected. Beck looks the part. Smart also said that Beck is laid-back, which is the polar opposite of Kirby Smart.
Another big off-season question was asked. How much will Todd Monken’s departure to the NFL impact the team? Smart said basically that it was better to lose a coordinator than a position coach. Position coaches have a bigger impact.
Monken and Smart sat down when Monken was leaving and told Smart that he had the best position coaches in college football. Also, it was discussed that the position coaches come up with some of the plays and help out in coming up with the game plan week in and week out. So keeping the position coaches looks to be a massive win for the offense.
It will be interesting to see if the offensive scheme stays the same with Bobo taking over. Monken is one of the best in-game player callers. Hopefully so is Bobo.
On the injury front, Mondon and Branson Robison will be out for some time. They will participate in football activities. But they will not participate in padded practice. Hopefully, they will make the first game of the season against UT Martin. That is the only key guys out for now with injuries. Hopefully, Georgia is not snake-bitten with the injury-bug, like they have been the past two seasons.
