Georgia Football: The AFCA Coaches Poll ranks Dawgs #1
By Max Tolbert
The AFCA Coaches Poll came out today and Georgia football was number one. I guess you can draw something out of this poll. What you can draw from this is that Georgia is expected to be the best team in the country. Wow! Who knew?
But the past two years Georgia has not received that honor. In 2021 Georgia was ranked 5th behind Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma. The next year in 2022, Georgia, who just won a national title, was ranked 3rd only behind Alabama and Ohio State.
So finally, Georgia gets a little bit of credit from the Coaches poll. The real question is what will the AP poll rank Georgia. They should be number one but last year they ranked 3rd there too. I have no earthly idea why that was, nor do I still.
Here are the top 10 of the Coaches’ poll
- Georgia
- Michigan
- Alabama
- Ohio State
- LSU
- USC
- Penn State
- FSU
- Clemson
- Tennessee
I do not understand why Clemson is in the top ten. Maybe Clemson has a bounce-back year, but I do not see them as a top-ten team starting the season.

There is a ton of hype around Michigan, Colin Cowherd picked them to win the national championship, because of JJ McCarthy? Huh? Anyway, there is a ton of hype for the Wolverines and we will see if they are up to that billing. FSU is another one of those teams with a ton of hype. They are finally back in the national spotlight after being gone for the last 6-ish years. That matchup against LSU in week one is going to be a huge game. We will know a lot about both of those teams after that game.
Back on the Dawgs. Georgia is expected to walk into Atlanta for the SEC Championship. They should, given how their schedule sets up for them. Should Georgia drop a game, they should be in decent shape for the playoff, given how highly ranked they are.
The expectation around Athens and the state by the fan base, however, should be and probably is that the Dawgs finish the way they started being #1.
