Georgia football has a new starting Quarterback.

Bells are ringing. People are taking the streets of Athens in celebration. As the white smoke appeared out of Butts-Mehre and a starting Quarterback was announced.

Carson Beck has won the starting job!

If you have been following the quarterback news since the start of spring it was pretty obvious who Smart was going to tap as the starter. Matt Stinchcomb when talking about this a few weeks ago on the SEC Network was giving winks to the camera. Almost everyone in the media and the fanbase understood it was Beck’s job to lose. It is the timing of the announcement that is surprising.

I for one, thought Smart was going to hold on to the super secret of who was the starter until the Dawgs kicked it off in week one against UT-Martin

I guess I was wrong.

Beck, out of Jacksonville, was a highly touted recruit who has been at Georgia for 3 years. He knows the system, which is probably why he won the job. Beck has had time to not only learn, but he has had time to mature.

It’s not easy knowing that you are the guy. Being the starting Quarterback at any level is immense pressure. But think about the pressure Beck is under, playing at Georgia, and whose shoes he is going to have to fill.

Smart said that Beck was one of the most intelligent football players he has ever been around, which is a pretty impressive thing to think about. Smart has coached a lot of great football players and some high-IQ guys. Beck being up there for Smart does make me feel better.

Smart said Beck had the edge over the rest of the QBs because he has more than one spring and fall camp. Having experience in the system has helped Beck win this job. Hopefully, that translates to on the field. Beck will have time to get his feet wet because Georgia’s first real opponent is not until week 3 against South Carolina.
