The injuries for Georgia football just keep stacking up. It has been a long laundry list of players getting sidelined for an extended time. Look at all the guys probably out for this week’s game against UAB and probably for a few more games:
- Javon Bullard- ankle
- Kendall Milton -MCL
- Roderick Robinson-ankle sprain
- Lawson Luckie-out
- Pearce Spurlin-out
- Austin Blaske-out
- Ty Ingram-Dawkins-out
- Marvin Jones Jr-out
- EJ Lightsey-out
- Ladd McConkey- out
- Amarius Mims-out
- Branson Robinson- out
That is a ton! In his weekly Monday meetings with the media, Kirby Smart said that Ron Courson told him it was the most extended injury list Smart has had since taking over the program in 2016. Georgia is unlike most programs because it has depth. But if this were any other program, they would be dead in the water.
While that may be true, Georgia has injuries in critical areas. With the injury to Amerius Mims, the offensive line depth is now in question. After one of the two scrimmages for fall camp, Smart talked about his worry about the depth at the offensive line. Smart said he felt good with the first 7 or 8 guys, but after that, he was worried. So what happens if another lineman gets sidelined for an extended amount of time? I have no idea, and it worries me to death.
The running back position is cursed with injuries. Kendall Milton and Roderick Robinson are both dealing with injuries, and it is unknown if they will miss playing time. So Georgia will depend heavily on Edwards, Jones, and Paul for the foreseeable future.
Georgia has injuries at running back, wide receiver, tight end, O-line, D-line, linebacker, and defensive back. That’s every position except QB! So the question is, is it time to panic?
Georgia has Auburn and Kentucky in the next few weeks. Auburn is only tricky because it is the first time the Dawgs play outside of Sanford Stadium. Kentucky is probably the best team Georgia will face in the regular season. Furthermore, Kentucky has always played Georgia tough and has always been able to match Georgia physically (well, better than most in the East). So, are the Dawgs due for a loss with all those injuries? Then what happens when we play Florida in Jacksonville? How many guys are back by then?
I am asking those questions because I really do not know. I have no idea how this Georgia team can sustain all these injuries. But, if Georgia does run through the gallant unscathed, one, I’ll be shocked. Two, Georgia will be heavy favorites to win not only the SEC but also the national title. The next few weeks will tell us how good of a team we have. I think Georgia should win all the games I talked about. They will be the favorites in all of them.
This, so far, is the most critical point of the season for the Dawgs. Which if you told me that in July, I would have laughed in your face. But now is the most crucial time of the season. We will see if the Dawgs can respond to the adversity. Georgia has been able to the past two seasons.
