Georgia Football: Why is there so much negativity around the Dawgs?
By Max Tolbert
Georgia football is 7-0 and is in its bye week, gearing up for the hated Gators. Being 7-0 for the third in a row is something many programs wish they could do. Think about all the programs right now that are undefeated. There aren’t that many, and next week, there will be one less, with Penn State taking on Ohio State. However, this may be the third season in a row that Georgia is 7-0, but it feels pretty differently than it has the previous two years.
Now, that could be because of the injury to Brock Bowers. Many Georgia fans are already assuming a loss is imminent. But I have already argued that one player does not win or lose a game. This isn’t basketball for crying out loud! But again, there seems to be a ton of negativity around the Dawgs. Look, I am the last person to criticize fans for being negative because I am a negative person. But it has gotten out of hand for an undefeated team and the number-one team in the country.
So I have to ask, are the Dawgs underperforming? I think the Dawgs are playing the way I expected them to play. Going into the season, I knew that the Dawgs replaced many veterans who played many snaps.
Replacing that many guys with that much playing experience would be a challenge. I did not think Georgia would go 7-5 and go to the Liberty Bowl. Kirby Smart and his staff have recruited too well for Georgia to take that big step backward.
So far, many young and inexperienced players have contributed massively to the team. Carson Beck, Earnest Greene, Dylan Fairchild, Monroe Freeling, Daylen Evertte. So, going into the season, I knew there would be growing pains. But I also expected the Dawgs to win every game they played because they are the more talented team.
Furthermore, I knew this team would get better as the season progressed. So that has come true. The Georgia team is much better than when it took on South Carolina in week 3. At times, they have played sloppy, especially against teams that are not good. For example, in Vanderbilt last week or Auburn, both teams were not good, and Georgia allowed them to have life because of turnovers and missed opportunities. This is all a part of the growing pains; in the stretch of the following four games, this cannot happen. If Georgia loses the turnover battle and misses opportunities, the Dawgs will drop at least one game.
But I still feel this team will start playing better, and I genuinely believe that Georgia will start looking like the number one team when they play Florida. I am also excited to see what the Dawgs and Oscar Delp look like without Brock Bowers. Everyone in the SEC is writing their eulogy for the 2023 Georgia Bulldogs because of Bowers’ injury. Heck, even some Georgia fans are writing one too. But I think the Dawgs will step it up because of Bowers’s absence, which is probably why the rest of the league is hoping for the Dawgs to falter because once Bowers comes back, this Georgia team will be even better.
So Georgia fans, relax! Everything is going to be okay. We have one of the best coaches in the country, probably the best coaching staff, and some of the best players. More than likely, Georgia will win out and be undefeated when they play in the SEC Championship. So, to answer my question, the Dawgs are playing to expectation and are on track to achieve everything I thought was possible for this year’s squad.
