The CFP rankings were released Halloween night, and Georgia football was not a fright. I am such a great writer! Anyway, The initial rankings for the CFP were released tonight, and the Dawgs are ranked number two. The Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked number one.

Now, to the folks there who are upset about Georgia not being number one, relax! The CFP committee is looking at resumes. Now, I don’t know if that will change, but as of right now, Ohio State has a better resume than Georgia. Is Georgia the better team? Yes! But Ohio State has two more ranked wins than the Dawgs do.

But that will all change in the next few weeks if the Dawgs win. Georgia has to face number #12. Mizzou, #10. Ole Miss and #17. Tennessee all in the next three games. This will bolster the Dawgs’ resume and, should they win, be number one when the rankings matter.

To me, I do not care where you put Georgia as long as they are invited to the dance. These rankings are pointless, but it is an excellent barometer to see what the thinking of the CFP committee. If Georgia were to win the SEC East, 4 of the five opponents they would face would be top 20 teams. So, for all those who said Georgia’s schedule was easy, think again. Now, all the Dawgs have to do is win.

This is probably the best thing for Georgia as a team, and Kirby Smart will use this as motivation. I remember last year when the CFP committee put Tennessee as the number one team, and then that Saturday, the Dawgs crushed the Vols’ soul.

I still remember in 2017 when Georgia was ranked #1 in the initial CFP rankings on Halloween night. I know exactly where I was when I watched the rankings released. I also remember watching it with my Grandpa, and he and I both said an expletive simultaneously out of fear that Georgia would choke it away. That unveiling of the initial CFP rankings in 2017 was a big deal for us Georgia fans.

Now, turn it to 2023, and I didn’t even watch the show or care about the rankings until December. It’s wild what two national championship does to a person. But unlike Tyler for Spartansburg, I appreciate where Kirby Smart has taken this program.

The Dawgs are playing their best version of football right now, and it will be hard to beat them. It is more than likely the Dawgs make the playoffs and more than likely be the top-ranked team. But again, that’s why we play the game. But I remain confident in the Dawgs and believe they will be number one when the rankings matter.
