Georgia Football: Dawgs finally #1 in new CFP rankings
By Max Tolbert
Georgia football is finally the number-one team in the country. After watching the most brutal final two minutes of a November college basketball game, the CFP top 25 was revealed. Most of us thought the Dawgs deserved the top ranking, but it matters only after “Selection Sunday.” Georgia has to continue winning, and they should be in the dance.
The biggest news for those who think resumé is the only indicator of a good football team is that Missouri is the number 9 team. This would give the Dawgs a top-10 win, which they won nearly by double digits. So, the narrative that Georgia has not played anybody is now officially dead.
Ole Miss, crushed by the Dawgs last Saturday 52-17, is ranked 13th. If both Mizzou and Ole Miss win out, this would give the Dawgs two top-15 wins. The Rebels might creep back into the top 10. I am a massive Ole Miss and Mizzou fan for the next two weeks. Hotty M-I-Z, y’all!
Georgia will play Tennessee this week in Knoxville. The Vols dropped to number 18 after an embarrassing loss to Mizzou last week (36-7). Just last week, the Vols were in the top 15. Even though their hopes of playing in an NY6 Bowl and the SEC Championship are destroyed, the Vols would like nothing more than to ruin the Dawgs’ season on Saturday in front of a national audience. However, the Dawgs are 10.5-point favorites as of Tuesday night, so we will see if the Vols somehow pull off the biggest upset of the CFB season.
Georgia has one more opponent left on its schedule, ranked in the top 10: Alabama. The Tide is ranked number 8 in the country. If there is movement in the rankings, Georgia and Alabama could face off as two of the top 5 teams in the nation. Personally, I think Alabama is one of the top four teams in the country right now. The committee may not agree with the Max Poll.
Ohio State fans will be upset and say that the Dawgs have not played anybody. But in fact, Georgia’s opponents have a better-combined record than Ohio State’s opponents. I am sure that will confuse them; facts seem to get in the way of Ohio State fans’ narratives.
All of this does not matter. The Dawgs need to finish this season undefeated to secure a playoff spot. That is all that matters, and the team and Kirby Smart realize that. So, focus on Tennesee and “Just Win, Baby!”
