Georgia Football: Brock Bowers named to a prestigious award
By Max Tolbert
Georgia Football’s own Brock Bowers was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award. The award goes to the nation’s top receiver. However, it is not just limited to wide receivers, as Brock Bowers, a tight end, was named to the list.
Bowers was among ten wideouts that were announced as semifinalists. Here are the other nine players announced for the award.
- Luther Burden III, Mizzou WR
- Keon Coleman, FSU WR
- Troy Franklin, Oregon WR
- Marvin Harrison JR, Ohio ST WR
- Xavier Legette, South Carolina WR
- Malik Nabers, LSU WR
- Rome Odunze, Washington WR
- Brian Thomas Jr, LSU WR
- Malik Washington, Virginia WR
Bowers is again the only tight end that made the semifinalist list. Bowers has 51 catches on the year for 661 yards and 6 TDs. Bowers’s numbers are not as big as the other candidates for the award, but Bowers would be as close if he were not injured for three games. Furthermore, if Bowers had been healthy the entire season, he could have been the first Georgia pass catcher to eclipse 1,000 yards in the season since Terrance Edwards.
The three finalists of the award will be announced on November 28. The winner of the Biletnikoff Award will be announced during the ESPN College Football Awards on December 8th. Last year’s winner was Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. Hyatt was drafted in the 3rd round and went to the New York Giants.
The betting favorite is probably Marvin Harrsion Jr. Harrison, who has 62 receptions for 1,093 yards and one touchdown. If I could argue for Bowers, Bowers is the most impactful receiver for the Dawgs. I know the award goes to the best receiver in the nation, but it should not go to a guy who has played 11 games and has only caught one touchdown. Bowers has five more touchdowns than Harrison.
It will be interesting to see if Bowers is named as one of the finalists. There has only been one other tight end to be named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award: Flordia’s Kyle Pitts. Should Bowers be named a finalist and win the award, he would be the first Georgia player ever to win the award.
Bowers and his undefeated Georgia Bulldogs take on Georgia Tech this Saturday at 7:30 in Atlanta.
