Georgia Football: An argument for Carson Beck winning the Heisman
By Max Tolbert
Georgia football has had many great players grace the field. College and Pro Football Hall of Famers have played for the Dawgs, but there have only been two Heisman Trophy winners. Frank Sinkwich and Herschel Walker both have won the coveted trophy. Both are immortalized with their retired numbers and Heisman trophies displayed inside the Butts-Mehre Building.
But could there be a third? Stetson Bennett was the closest a Georgia player has come in some time, even being one of the top four candidates and attending the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City. That was the first time since 1992 that a Georgia football player finished in the top 4 voting. The player in 1992 was Garrison Hearst, who finished 3rd overall.
But now there are talks about Carson Beck being a Heisman Finalist. Moreover, some in the media say he is the favorite to win the Heisman in 2024. But here is the thing: Beck will more than likely leave as soon as the Georgia season ends., I would beg him to stay, but he might be a first-round pick in this year’s draft. So, he should be considered for the Heisman.
First, Beck’s QB rating is 169.48, which is pretty solid. But when you look at Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix, they have 208.34 and 191.35, respectively. So Beck is close to both of them.
Daniels for LSU needs to play meaningful football down the stretch. LSU season is over, and they are not competing for a championship. Isn’t the Heisman based on Heisman moments? Heisman moments happen when you are playing meaningful games. Beck is going to play in those, and Daniels is not. Bo Nix is in that situation, but what competent defense has he gone against? None! Nix plays in the PAC 12.
Furthermore, Beck is averaging 301.8 yards per game, eighth best in the country. Michael Penix is leading the nation with 335.9 yards per game. But again, what defense has Michael Penix played against? Carson Beck has played weekly against some of the better defenses in the country.
Here is the last definitive stat you need to know. There is only one quarterback at the FBS level with at least 250 yards throwing in 11 games. That quarterback’s name is Carson Beck.
Beck will likely finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting, but he should be one of the four candidates in New York City in December. Beck could lead Georgia to their third straight undefeated regular season and third straight CFP championship. While Georgia should easily handle Tech, look for the SEC Championship to boost Beck’s resume. If Beck has a good day in Atlanta and helps the Dawgs win their second SEC Championship, people will talk about him for Heisman.
