Say it with me: Georgia Football remains #1 in the newest CFP rankings. Once again, the Dawgs are the number one team because they are head and shoulders, the best team in college football. What was surprising was that Michigan only moved up one spot after beating #2 Ohio State last week. That tells you that the committee thinks Georgia is the best college football team.
For Georgia, it is easy, win, and you are in. Nothing matters much to Georgia fans as long as the Dawgs win in Atlanta on Saturday. Should Georgia beat Alabama this Saturday, they will play in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl on January 1st.
Should Georgia lose to Alabama this Saturday, well, chaos will ensue. You know what happens if Georgia loses in the SEC Championship. Does Alabama get in? Does Georgia get in? You need to have both teams in the playoffs in that scenario. But I am not on the committee and biased, so I have no idea what they will do.
My bigger issue is with the Conference championships. There is no need for Georgia to play in it. If Georgia were like Notre Dame and were independent, Georgia would be in the playoffs. Also, are the criteria of the CFP committee the four best teams or the four most deserving teams? Those are two entirely different questions. Everyone can agree that Georgia and Alabama are two of the four best teams in college football. Michigan and Oregon are the next two. Either way, there should be a reward for going 12-0 in one of the toughest conferences in college football.
Ole Miss still hanging tough in the top 15 is a big deal for Georgia. Ole Miss could be in the top 10 when the final CFP rankings are revealed Sunday afternoon. Also, Tennessee being in the top 25 helps Georgia, and more than likely, they will stay in the bottom of the top 25.
With all that being said, Georgia needs to do one thing to stay out of the chaos, and that is win. All the Dawgs need to do is handle business in Atlanta on Saturday, and they will be playing in the Sugar Bowl for a chance at history. I like Georgia’s chances; we will see if my gut is right.
