It never fails that every season the Georgia Bulldogs have at least one standout freshman. These freshmen find themselves having a solid season with meaningful snaps and then explode onto the scene after a huge performance in a crucial game.
From Jake Fromm to Malaki Starks, these guys come up huge on the biggest stage to lead the Bulldogs to championships. How about this season? With a huge game with major CFP implications coming to Athens on Saturday, three freshmen Bulldogs must have one of these major performances for Georgia to have a shot at another championship.
1. DL Elijah Griffin
Georgia has been banged up on the defensive line recently. Jordan Hall has officially been ruled out with a leg injury and Joshua Horton is listed as probable. Not only that, Christen Miller had to come off the field against Mississippi State, but he walked off on his own power and should be fine.
Even if Miller is good to go, Kirby Smart is probably going to limit his reps on the field. That leaves Elijah Griffin. The true freshman has already made his presence known with a solid 14 tackles on the season. However, Georgia needs him to explode onto the scene on Saturday. Maybe not necessarily to rush the quarterback, but to shut down the running game up the middle and put Texas in an uncomfortable spot where they have no choice but to pass.
Griffin needs to be a game wrecker, and more reps coming his way Texas will need to watch out for this freshman.
2. RB Chauncey Bowens
Chauncey Bowens is a name Georgia fans are already familiar with. Bowens had led the team in total rushing yards until Nate Frazier had a spectacular 181 rushing yard game against Mississippi State this past week. Bowens however has had big moments himself as he came up big with 119 yards in an eventual loss to Alabama.
Georgia is going to want to run the ball like they did against Texas like they did against Alabama ealier this season. For that to happen, Bowens needs to get going. Expect Bowens to get a lot of carries on Saturday and take full advantage of the opportunities given to him.
3. TE Elyiss Williams
Elyiss Williams is a name not talked about often, but he probably should be. The true freshman, standing at 6'7", has more receiving yards on the season than Lawson Luckie does.
With Luckie being banged up from a hard hit taken this past Saturday, there is a chance Williams' number is called a lot more than normal. When the ball has been thrown his way, Williams has made the most of his opportunities. Could this be the next tight end star at Georgia?
He might have the chance to put himself in that conversation with a breakout game against Texas.
