Newest Georgia injury is a huge blow to defensive line depth
Now it's time for some bad injury news for Georgia football. During a press conference on Tuesday, Kirby Smart detailed four key injury updates for Georgia ahead of their game with Florida on Saturday. This update was a mix of players who could return from their injuries on Saturday and some who still have some progress to make, but will likely be back by the end of the season.
However, there was one more injury update shared by Smart, and this one is as bad as it gets.
"Yeah, Joseph (Jonah-Ajonye) had to deal with a surgery that's gonna put him out for the rest of the year," Smart said via 247Sports.com. "He's gonna be out the rest of the year, and he did one of the lower extremity injury that he's not gonna be with us, but he's already had the surgery. He had it before we went to, I guess he had the surgery after but he didn't get to go to Texas because of the injury."
Defensive Lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye out for the season
Smart has confirmed that five-star freshman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye is out for the season after having a recent lower extremity surgery.
The one bright side about this news is that Jonah-Ajonye only played in four games this season, so he is still able to redshirt this year. However, this loss is still not what you want to hear.
Jonah-Ajonye may have only recorded one tackle in his four games this season, but he was a solid depth piece for Georgia’s defensive line. So even though it wasn’t likely that he’d play much the rest of this season, it would have been nice to have him as a backup option.
We also need to factor in how this will hurt his development in the long run. Jonah-Ajonye won’t be able to practice and get those crucial reps he needs to improve for future seasons when he’ll be relied on more. So losing that precious practice time is potentially the biggest blow.
Hopefully he’ll be able to make a full recovery in no time, because the sooner he’s back the better for everyone.
