Casey Barner is a five-star recruit who is the No. 1 safety in the country and the top ranked player from the state of Georgia. Barner just kicked his junior season off on Wednesday night, and he put on an amazing performance in front of Kirby Smart.
In fact, arguably the best play of the night came when he recorded one show-stopping interception that occurred right in front of where Smart was standing on the sideline.
5* S Casey Barner looking very good right now in this McEachern-Kell game. The #1 Safety in the country just had a nice INT with Kirby Smart in attendance

Barner could probably play in college today, so the fact he still has two more years in high school is a bit absurd. He however has all the tools to become one of the best safeties in the country when he gets to college, and that fact alone makes him an extremely important target for Smart and Georgia.
5-star Casey Barner proves why he is one of Georgia's most important recruits
As mentioned, Barner is the No. 1 recruit from the state of Georgia in the 2028 recruiting class. That alone makes him an important target for Kirby Smart, but their recent struggles recruiting in-state talent makes him a valuable recruit as well.
Georgia dominated in-state recruiting in the 2025 class, but since then they have really struggled. Georgia only signed five of the top 20 recruits in the state in the 2026 class and currently only hold four commitments from top 20 recruits in the 2027 class.
The talent is too good in the state to not be getting more players from Georgia, but Barner offers Georgia an opportunity to change this narrative. If he chooses Georgia then he could help recruit other in-state recruits to UGA as well, so that is why he is one of Georgia's most important recruits in the 2028 class.
It's easy for anyone to see why Georgia needs to win a recruitment when that player has five-stars next to their name, but Barner left no doubt that he deserves all five of those stars during his season opener on Wednesday.

Not only was he making big plays on defense, but he was all over the field on offense too. This includes a 58-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game.

Barner will only play safety in college, but his athleticism and football IQ is off the charts. That however is just one reason why he's so important to Georgia, but him being an in-state target arguably makes him more important than anyone else.
5-star Casey Barner shares where his recruitment stands with Georgia
Kirby Smart and Georgia have recruited Barner since sixth grade. He has taken countless visits to Georgia and he recently named the Bulldogs one of his top schools too.
After his game on Wednesday he spoke to the media about where he stands with Georgia, and it sounds like he is building a great relationship with UGA.
“Georgia is close to home, man,” Barner said via dawgnation.com. “Me and Kirby [Smart], we’re guys, bro. The whole staff. The whole secondary. Even the offensive staff. We are all tight. They are doing what they are doing. They are doing what they should be doing. I wouldn’t say they have to clean up anything. I love the University of Georgia.”
Ohio State is the team making the most noise with Barner right now, but there is plenty of time for Georgia to win this recruitment. It won't be easy, but Georgia most likely will be in the running until he is ready to sign with a school in 16 months.
