A Stetson Bennett-Georgia reunion may not be feasible, but that could be a good thing

Chances are if you are a Georgia football fan you are also an Atlanta Falcons fan. While that was a sweet taste in 2016, it has since been a luxury on one end and a burden on the other as Atlanta can’t seem to find a good option at quarterback. Fans however have been begging for Stetson Bennett to return to Georgia so he can try and save the Falcons.

The Falcons have been mediocre at best in the past decade while Georgia has dominated the SEC and won two national championships. One of the main contributors of those national titles was Stetson Bennett who won MVP in both title games.

However, since being drafted in 2023 by the Rams Bennett has had limited opportunities to play. When he does play in the preseason and practices he always seems to do fairly well.

Who know if Bennett is a starting-caliber player, but the Falcons have a QB room full of injuries so many fans have called for the Falcons to take action and trade for Bennett. However, now that former first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. has been cleared to play for Thursday's game against the Green Bay Packers it will likely never happen.

Atlanta passing on Stetson Bennett may have been the best outcome for his future

While the fan-proposed trade never happened, it might be for the better of Bennett's career. Bennett's contract with the Rams expires at the end of the 2026 season. Meaning, once this season concludes, Bennett is allowed to go to any team that offers him a contract as long as the Rams do not place a franchise tag him.

While at the Rams, he can continue to be Stafford's backup and get snaps if needed in blowouts or emergency situations. If Bennett had been traded to Atlanta, he would have started maybe two or three games before inevitably being benched by Penix.

If Bennett had come to Atlanta and started those games it is hard to know if his stock would have risen at all. Atlanta has not been kind to their quarterbacks since Matt Ryan left town with almost all of their starters having injuries due to a weak offensive line or being cut because of the limited help around them.

Quarterbacks always take the bulk of the blame when teams are doing poor as well. If Bennett had been traded to Atlanta it’s impossible to know if they would’ve been any better. If Bennett decides to leave the Rams in 2026 he can leave and go to a different team on his own terms. As of now he may even have a chance to start for a heavily talented Rams team if the veteran QB Stafford retires. Any way you look at it, Atlanta missed out on a great quarterback, but that does not mean that Bennett missed out on a great opportunity.
