Georgia football fans will have the pleasure of listening to former Bulldogs' QB Aaron Murray call his first Georgia game on Saturday on the SEC Network. Unfortunately they may have to listen to him tout Vanderbilt quarterback Jared Curtis as one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

Murray has already been tooting Curtis' horn leading up to this game, but it was the comparison he made to Matthew Stafford that riled up some Georgia fans.

“I know Georgia fans don’t want to hear this, but this kid is Matthew Stafford,” Aaron Murray said. “I mean, you can just tell the way he throws the football, the way he commands it, the arm angles, man, it’s just so effortless.”

Georgia fans may not want to admit it, but there are a lot of similarities between Stafford and Curtis. They both can make every throw in the book and are as tough as quarterbacks come. Curtis is also a capable runner if he needs to be, and he may even be a better runner than Stafford.

Both Curtis and Stafford were elite prospects out of high school too. Curtis was the No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class while Stafford was No. 1 in the 2006 class. It's easy to see the similarities between the two players even if Georgia fans don't want to admit it, but even if they are comparable it's far too early to compare them like Murray did.

It's too early to compare Jared Curtis to Matthew Stafford

While Curtis and Stafford have similarities in the way they play, it is far too early to compare them. Stafford has proven himself time and time again back in the day when he was at Georgia and during his long NFL career. Curtis on the other hand hasn't proven himself at any capacity yet.

Curtis has plenty of time to prove he can be an elite quarterback like Stafford, and at this point in his career no one should doubt him. He has all the tools to be a great player, but until he puts all those tools together and wins some football games against great teams he will never be the same as Stafford.

Stafford is a proven winner and Curtis is a quarterback with a lot of potential. At one point that's all Stafford was too, but Curtis needs to perform on the biggest stages before he should be compared to Stafford.

Jared Curtis ruled out for Georgia vs Vanderbilt

Stafford is someone most Georgia fans will always love, but the same will never be said about Curtis. He had an opportunity to come to Georgia just like Stafford, but after flipping to Vanderbilt last year he will not be beloved by UGA fans like Stafford is.

Georgia fans for the most part have moved past Curtis' decision to leave them for Vandy, and that likely won't change. Curtis was expected to be the starter in Saturday's game when Vanderbilt comes to Georgia, but he was ruled out due to an injury.

Georgia will play Vanderbilt again during the 2028 season which will likely be the first time Georgia gets to play Curtis. He will have plenty of opportunities before then to prove he is actually comparable to Stafford, but until he wins some big games this comparison shouldn't be made yet.
