Alabama will always be a team Georgia will compete against on the recruiting trail. Those recruiting battles are extremely important for Kirby Smart to come out on top because recruiting against Alabama could be the difference between Georgia staying on top in the SEC or the Tide surpassing them.
The state of Georgia is home to some of the best recruits in the country. Keeping these recruits in the state and convincing them to come to Athens is one of the biggest goals that Smart and his staff have, but it is not always an easy thing to pull off.
Last year Alabama earned a commitment from 2027 Peach State corner Nash Johnson. But Georgia forced him to make a tough decision which ultimately led to him decommitting from Alabama this week.

3-star Nash Johnson opens the door for Georgia after decommitting from Alabama
Last October Johnson made the decision to commit to Alabama. This occurred before Georgia had even offered him a scholarship, so at the time this wasn't a loss for UGA. But just one day after he committed Georgia decided to offer him a scholarship.
This sent a clear signal that Georgia wanted to flip him from Alabama, but that was not going to be easy to accomplish. Fast forward to today and Georgia still hasn't officially flipped him, but this decommitment could be a sign that UGA is making progress in his recruitment.
Johnson has three official visits scheduled for this summer. Those visits are to Tennessee, Miami and Ole Miss. So at best Georgia is running in fourth place in his recruitment right now, but that could change if Smart is able to convince him to take an official visit to Athens.
Only time will tell how this recruitment shakes out, but for now Georgia is the running for a player who turned their back on Alabama.
