Georgia's defense has always been one of the best defenses in the country. Their defenses are some of the biggest reasons why they won multiple National Championships and SEC titles over the last few years.
But the start of the SEC season this year has shown that is no longer the case. In fact, it has been so bad that some could say an epidemic is sweeping through Georgia's defense. And what are the symptoms? Allowing opposing quarterbacks to look like prime Tom Brady.
Georgia's defense is allowing rival QBs to look like Heisman frontrunners
Georgia has faced two SEC teams so far this season, and in those two games they let the opposing quarterbacks look like the best players in the country. The latest example of this was in Georgia's loss to Alabama on Saturday where Ty Simpson torched UGA's defense all night long.
Simpson completed 24 of 38 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns against what is supposed to be an elite Georgia defense. He was even able to find the end zone with his legs one time as well. Georgia did a better job slowing Simpson down in the second half, but the damage was already done after he carved UGA up on third downs en route to a near perfect first half performance.
Going back two weeks now will show Georgia fans that Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar had an ever better game. Aguilar threw for 371 yards and four touchdowns while also finding the end zone with his legs one time as well against UGA. Georgia did snag two interception from Aguilar, but that doesn't take away from how good he looked against the Bulldogs.
Something is going to have to change in a hurry if Georgia wants to end this epidemic. They can't afford to let opposing quarterbacks look like Heisman frontrunners if they are going to bounce back and win the SEC.
Georgia's next chance to prove they can can play good defense is next week when Kentucky comes to town. And it goes without saying that Georgia has serious problems if the Wildcats QB dominates Georgia as well.
