Georgia football is entering the final stretch of their season and they still have all of their goals in front of them. So now more than ever it is time to pay attention to the rankings as they will help determine their fate for the rest of the season.
The College Football Playoff rankings are the only rankings that truly matter at this point, but it is still fun to see how the AP Poll views Georgia as well. And while UGA beat Mississippi State by 20 points on Saturday, that wasn't enough for the AP voters to move Georgia up in their rankings.
AP Poll voters weren't impressed with Georgia's win over Mississippi State
Even though Georgia beat Mississippi State 41-21 on Saturday, the AP voters kept Georgia at No. 5 in their updated rankings. But based on how the teams ranked above Georgia did on Saturday, it's easy to see why Georgia stayed put.
No. 1 Ohio State cruised to an easy 34-10 win at Purdue on Saturday while No. 3 Texas A&M destroyed Missouri 38-17. No. 4 Alabama also got a big win as they handled their business against LSU 20-9. No. 2 Indiana however did not have as great of a performance as they only beat a bad Penn State team 27-24. This could have resulted in the Hoosiers sliding down the rankings a little bit, but they stayed put just like every other team above Georgia.
Georgia's previous two games came against unranked teams, but that will not be the case this weekend. Saturday marks another massive showdown for Georgia as they welcome No. 10 Texas to Athens. Georgia beat Texas twice last season, but they will need to make it three wins in a row if they want any chance at making the SEC Championship game later this season. Texas on the other hand needs to win just to have a chance to make the College Football Playoff.
So it's clear that a lot is on the line on Saturday for Georgia in their SEC finale.
