After losing to Auburn in embarrassing fashion last week Georgia dropped four spots to No. 5 in the AP Poll. This week they were on a bye, but No. 2 BYU lost to UCF so Georgia was expected to move up a spot.
The Bulldogs however moved up two spots to No. 3 in the updated AP Poll by jumping Notre Dame even though neither team played this weekend.
AP Poll voters may have forgotten about Georgia's loss to Auburn
Georgia's loss to Auburn last week was one of the biggest upsets of the college football season. Auburn is an average team, and they proved that on Saturday because LSU dominated them 38-17. This in theory would make Georgia's loss to them look even worse, but the AP voters don't think so.
Instead the AP voters moved Georgia past Notre Dame even though they were on a bye. Notre Dame was also on a bye this week too, so it's hard to explain what changed in the minds of the voters when neither team took the field.
Georgia may not have deserved to fall below Notre Dame in the first place, and maybe the voters realized that. Notre Dame lost to BYU last week which is still a better loss than Georgia's defeat to Auburn, but Notre Dame doesn't have a good win. Georgia has their win at Alabama while the Irish haven't beat any team with a pulse yet this season.
It still is strange to see Georgia jump Notre Dame this week, but maybe the AP voters realized their mistake and used this week's poll to fix the problem.
Georgia has three more chances to add to their resume
Georgia could use some help with their resume thanks to their loss to Auburn who subsequently got blown out by LSU. Thankfully the Week 8 AP Poll showed that they have plenty of opportunities to improve their resume in the next three weeks.
Georgia's next three games are all against teams that are currently ranked. Up next is a date with No. 17 Florida in Atlanta followed by a road game at No. 12 Ole Miss. After that Georgia heads home to face No. 22 Missouri before two much easier games to finish the season.
The unfortunate news for Georgia is that Florida could drop out of the top 25 if they beat them and Missouri may not even be ranked anymore by the time they play. At the end of the day though it doesn't really matter what happens to these teams after Georgia plays them because as long as UGA keeps winning they'll get to play for an SEC Championship and make the College Football Playoff as well.
