Georgia has made a strong case for why they should be the No. 1 team in the country after blowing out Oklahoma 41-13 on Saturday. Texas is the No. 1 team right now, but they may not deserve it.
Oklahoma was supposed to be Georgia’s first test this year, but they ultimately weren’t a challenge at all because of how great Georgia played. The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead which quickly expanded to 28-0 by halftime. They didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half either as they made Oklahoma look like they didn’t belong on the same field.
Georgia’s yet to be challenged so far this season
Georgia is 4-0 after beating Oklahoma, and none of their games have been close. They beat Tennessee State in their season opener by 60 then beat Western Kentucky by 50 in week two. Week three they beat Arkansas by 28 on the road and then this week they beat Oklahoma by 28.
Sure Georgia has faced some pretty weak competition so far this year, but they deserve credit for dominating these teams. Oklahoma also has one of the best defenses in the country, so scoring as much as they did while shutting down their offense for most of the game deserves respect.
Georgia will get a chance to play better competition soon, but they’ve dominated every team they’ve played this year and that’s something Texas can’t say.
Texas’ two marquee wins weren’t convincing
Texas’ does have two ranked wins over Ohio State and Tennessee that on paper are better than any of Georgia’s wins. Georgia’s best win was their blowout win over Oklahoma this weekend, and while it wasn’t a ranked win these Texas wins weren’t that convincing.
Ohio State dominated Texas for three quarters. Texas deserves credit for coming back and winning that game, but a 20-point fourth quarter comeback win is a bit lucky. Their win over Tennessee this weekend wasn’t that convincing either. They only won by three points even though the Vols had to play their backup quarterback for part of the game, and they almost gave the game away after Tennessee successfully recovered an onside kick late in the game.
Tennessee also doesn’t have a quality win yet this season, so it’s impossible to know if they’re actually good or not. The Vols could easily lose a handful of games and end up being a bad team which would make Texas’ three point win not look that good anymore.
There’s a good argument for why Georgia deserves to be No. 1 over Texas. The chances of it happening are probably pretty slim, but Georgia deserves more credit from AP Poll voters after their win over Oklahoma.
