The center position in the NFL got a little thinner yesterday as two great centers in the league decided to call it a career. Lions center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement at the age of 29, but when no one was looking, so did former Georgia center David Andrews, who spent 10 years with the New England Patriots.
Andrews is a two-time Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots and played with the GOAT Tom Brady in his final years with the Patriots. Andrews, in an emotional retirement announcement, said the reason for this decision is that he only wanted to play for one team in his career, and New England is where he wanted to finish his career.
"I didn't want to go do it for another organization," Andrews said in his retirement announcement. "That wasn't what I had in mind to finish my career; I wanted to finish it here, and I did."
The Johns Creek, Georgia, native was signed by the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2015 after spending four years at Georgia. Andrews was a standout in his first-ever training camp, and with the injury to the Patriots center, Bryan Stork, Andrews was able to be a starter in Week 1 of his rookie season.
After a standout rookie season, Andrews beat out Stork in 2016 for the starting center job, adn it was history from there. After his second season, Andrews was named a captain for the Patriots for his final eight seasons in the league.
Andrews was emotional in his retirement announcement, as any player would be when they are giving up all that they have known for years. He announced his family plans to stay in New England full-time, and he has dreams of becoming a scout or coach one day, but right now is planning to just enjoy the time he has now with his family.
Congratulations on a great career, David Andrews, and Bulldog Nation will always be behind you!
