The Big Ten has control of college football right now. Sure the SEC is still sending more players to the NFL, but the Big Ten winning the last three National Championships has given them an arguement for being the best conference in the country for the first time in decades.
Kirby Smart recognizes this and that has caused him to drastically change how he feels about winning the SEC.
“Apparently all we can do is win the SEC championship right now, so that’s not good enough, but you know those are good teams,” Smart said via dawgnation.com. “We got beat by the team that we beat. It’s hard to beat a good team twice. They beat us, and Notre Dame was a really good team. I got a lot of respect for them, so we did not play well, and that falls on me.”
Kirby Smart has found new motivation thanks to the Big Ten
Earlier this year Smart said that winning the SEC is one of the hardest things to do in sports. Yes, he said that sometimes he thinks winning the conference is more difficult then winning a national title.
That may be a bit silly to suggest, but the SEC’s run of dominance in the 2000s showed that if you win the SEC you’ll probably win it all. So in all honesty there was some truth to what he said.
But Smart doesn’t care about winning the SEC as much anymore. It definitely still matters to him, but he cares far more about winning a national title for Georgia again.
Winning the SEC will always be a good reason to celebrate, but Smart would trade those titles for National Championships in a heartbeat.
Hopefully this new mindset will be what it takes for Georgia to get back on top of the college football world again this year.
