Former Georgia football quarterback Carson Beck has more to deal with than a lackluster defense and disjointed locker room in his new role at the University of Miami. He faces the curse that has followed most quarterbacks who hit the transfer portal from Georgia.

History is not kind to several quarterbacks who played at Georgia but ended up elsewhere after transferring. Jacob Eason departed to the University of Washington and bounced around a few teams in the NFL before being cut by the Packers. Brock Vandagiff lost his passion for football after a year at Kentucky after transferring from UGA.

What about D'Wan Mathis? He ended up at Davenport University, a division II school, after a brain cyst sidelined him from wearing the red and black. J.T. Daniels took medical retirement in 2023 due to concussion concerns, after playing for West Virginia and Rice after leaving Georgia. Jaden Rashada, who had recruitment troubles follow him from Arizona State to Florida to Georgia, now finds himself at Sacramento State.

Carson Beck's one glimmer of hope

Justin Fields admits he shouldn't have committed to Georgia, and is widely considered an Ohio State Buckeye, not a Bulldog. He didn't even throw 40 passes while at Georgia. Even so, he may provide an additional cautionary tale for Carson Beck to consider.

Yes, he just signed a hefty $40 million contract with the New York Jets. He's also at his third NFL team in five years. He has the payday, but not the stats to match. His passer rating is average. and Fields' interception to touchdown percentage is high at 69 percent.

All this means that Beck needs to hope his $2 million NIL deal holds him over because his prospects appear sky high, but the shadowed history of quarterback transfers from Georgia follows him, whether he realizes it or not. Time will tell if he can break this curse, but Georgia fans are hoping he is not able to at Miami.
