The fourth edition of the 2025 College Football Playoff rankings is out and Georgia unsurprisingly stayed put at No. 4. Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M all remained undefeated with big wins over the weekend, so there was no reason for the Bulldogs to move up even after their 35-3 win over Charlotte.
Even though there isn’t much to discuss when it comes to Georgia’s ranking, the playoff committee did confirm UGA’s unique spot in the college football season on Tuesday.
Georgia’s unique position confirmed by CFP committee
The College Football Playoff committee confirmed the unique position Georgia finds themselves in right now. In fact, the Bulldogs are is a position that no team has ever been in before.
The top four seeds and first round byes are not reserved for conference champions this year like they were last year. So Georgia does not need to win the SEC to remain in the top four.
That is really good news because as it stands today Georgia has not earned their spot in the SEC Championship game. If Alabama and Texas A&M both win this weekend then Georgia won’t make it to Atlanta, but if one of them loses then UGA will play for an SEC title. But if Georgia only cares about improving their chances to win a National Championship, then missing the SEC title game altogether and guaranteeing a first round bye in the CFP is the best outcome.
Georgia’s final game of the season against Georgia Tech will have no impact on if they make the SEC Championship game or not, but a loss would make it very difficult to earn a first round bye. So a win on Friday against the Yellow Jackets is as important as ever before.
