Georgia football just got a blowout victory at Mississippi State this weekend which normally would be enough to move up in the rankings. But since no there were no teams above Georgia that lost they unfortunately held steady at No. 5 in the AP Poll that was released on Sunday.

The College Football Playoff committee however had a chance to reward Georgia in the second release of their rankings this season, but instead of moving Georgia up they punished them by giving them the hardest path of any team in the 12-team field.

CFP committee refuses to reward Georgia in 2nd rankings of 2025

Just like the AP Poll, the CFP committee decided to keep Georgia at No. 5 in the second edition of their rankings this season. This also means they would be the 5-seed in the playoff if it began today.

Georgia's path in CFP bracket if the season came to an end today is as hard as it gets. They would however get to start out with an easy first round matchup at home against USF. While that wouldn't be a massive game on paper, Georgia's first playoff game in Sanford Stadium would be a historic moment.

Assuming Georgia wins this game, they would then get to play No. 4 Alabama in the quarterfinals of the playoff. Everyone knows how bad Georgia has been against the Crimson Tide and how good Alabama has been this season, so this would be a scary matchup for UGA. If Georgia did survive though they would likely have No. 1 Ohio State waiting for them in the semifinals.

With four weeks still to play this season these rankings will likely change a lot before the final bracket is released in December. But no one should hope to see the bracket change more than Georgia because of how difficult their current path is.
