College football expert shares interesting perspective on Georgia football’s season
The new era of college football is an interesting one because of the new playoff format. Now that 12 teams are included, Georgia football still has a great chance to make the CFP even with their loss against Alabama.
A year ago that may not have been the case because the Bulldogs would likely have to be perfect the rest of the season just to get in. However, now they can easily afford one more loss before they're on the bubble.
ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum however thinks Georgia could even lose two more games and still get in.
"I think the only team in America that could possibly lose three games and get in the playoff is Georgia."
- Paul Finebaum
Obviosuly these two losses would have to come against specific teams for Georgia to still get in the CFP. Losing to a team like Mississippi State this weekend would be one that would be tough to overcome. However, a loss at Ole Miss or even at home to Tennessee would fall in the “good loss” category.
One interesting thing Finebaum said was that a win over Texas in Austin next week is a must. I personally don’t think Georgia needs to win to get in the CFP, but a win would certainly help a lot. Finebaum however did say that a win in Texas would essentially make the loss to Alabama not count. His reasoning was because the Bulldogs lost to the Tide by one play, so a win over Texas shows that this game was more of a fluke than anything else.
I don’t know about you but a win against Texas wouldn't change my feelings about the Alabama loss. I recognize that beating Texas would set this team up very nicely, but I'm sick of losing to Alabama, and those feelings aren't going anywhere.
So I disagree with Finebaum that a win over Texas makes the Alabama loss not really count. There's a reason we play the games, so I think it's pretty lame to act like that loss didn't happen. But he is right that beating Texas would put Georgia in a great position to make the first-ever 12-team playoff.
So let’s hope Kirby Smart is able to do just that next week, after a win against Mississippi State this weekend first of course.
