Georgia football is very familiar with earning commitments from the best players in the country. That doesn't mean UGA gets every player in the country they want, but the Bulldogs have signed a top two class in the country each of the last three years, so they tend to get those top players that they set their eyes on.
Two of the top players in the country in today's game are wide receivers Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith. Both players just wrapped up their true freshman seasons, and they both more than lived up to the hype they had coming out of high school.
Smith was the top ranked player in the 2024 recruiting class and helped lead Ohio State to the National Championship this past season. Williams on the other hand was the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2024 class and was a star at Alabama who recorded 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns.
Both players are very secure at their schools, but there was a time they were both being targeted by Georgia back in their high school recruiting days. In fact, Smith and Williams visited Georgia at the same time and Williams recently shared on the Bunch Formation Podcast that they briefly discussed teaming up at Georgia.
“We thought about it,” Williams shared via dawgnation.com. “We did think about it.”
Williams and Smith would have been the best wide receiver duo in the country
While Georgia did target both Smith and Williams out of high school, UGA was never really a threat to win either recruitment. However, it's impossible to not think about how electric they would have been together if they decided to come to Georgia.
This is especially the case after watching Georgia's wide receivers struggle with dropping the ball last season. So who knows how much better of a season UGA could have had if Smith and Williams were both on Georgia's team.
That however didn't happen and neither player will ever end up in Athens during their careers. But the tides have shifted in Georgia's wide receiver room which has a chance to be a strength of the team during the 2025 season.
