This weekend was officially Cupcake Saturday, as Georgia, and many of the elite teams in the Top 25, play lower-tier teams. No one was expecting Austin Peay to provide much of a challenge for the Bulldogs, especially after their dominant week one against Marshall led by the electric quarterback Gunner Stockton.
Just within the SEC, Alabama played UL Monroe, Tennessee battled ETSU, South Carolina played SC State, and LSU faced LA Tech. All were expected to win by hefty margins with these types of games giving the opponents a hefty paycheck as well, but they usuall don't do much for giving fans the nail-biting action they expect from SEC play.
Georgia however had other ideas.
The stat line was supposed blow up after this weekend
Everyone expected Stockton to throw for a few hundred yards and several touchdowns. One also thought the defensive line would feat and would record several sacks and tackles for loss. Many were thinking this Saturday be called Pad-Your-Stats Saturday, as all across the country similar games were being played. This should have been an easy win and an opportunity to let the second team get needed reps and game experience, but that unfortunately did not happen.
Instead of a comfortable win, Georgia head to sweat this game out for much longer than they wanted. Georgia was favored by 48 points entering this contest, so their 28-6 victory didn't even come close to living up to their expectations.
It is worth mentioning that Georgia's defense lived up to their expecations as holding a team even as bad as Austin Peay to six points is very good, but the offense didn't even come close to holding up their end of the bargain.
Something is going to have to change for Georgia before next week, because if they play as poorly as they did on Saturday they won't stand a chance against a hot Tennessee team.
