Georgia football did not have the season anyone was hoping for this year. The Bulldogs did win an SEC Championship, but they did not come close to winning a National Championship after falling to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl 23-10.
So where does Kirby Smart and Georgia go from here?
This obviously is a very important offseason for the Bulldogs because they have a lot of work to do if they want to compete for a National Championship next season. And while a majority of that work needs to come from a player development and recruiting standpoint, some of the changes needed are to the coaching staff.
A lot of Georgia fans have an idea of who they want to be fired from the staff and who they hope stay at Georgia, and former UGA defensive end David Pollack believes there will be a few changes to the coaching staff this offseason.
“I think there will be several changes to the Georgia (coaching) staff,” Pollack said via ugawire.usatoday.com. “It’s already coming down the pipe and that will come out soon.”
Who could be off the staff next season?
Today's college football is extremely unpredictable, so there is a chance any coach on the staff could be gone next season. Whether they are fired or take a new job, anything is possible at this point in the offseason. But most Georgia fans would likely assume, and maybe even hope, that the changes will come on offense.
The consesus among the Georgia fanbase is that Georgia's defense was strong enough to win a National Championship, but it was their offense that really held the team back all season. And a lot of that blame fell on Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo, who routinely did not put the offense in a good enough position to succeed. So Bobo may be the most likely candidate to not be on the staff next season.
If Smart were to make a change to his coaching staff, the expectation is that it would be very soon. That way he would have enough time to hire a new coach and get them up to speed before spring ball and the bulk of recruiting takes place this offseason. So stay tuned as these changes realistically could come at any point.
