Everyone should agree that Kirby Smart is one of the best coaches in all of college football. Georgia fans will tell you that he is the very best, but other fans and college football personalities believe there are some coaches better than him.
Connor Stalions, who was at the center of the Michigan sign stealing scandal, recently came out and said that he thinks Smart and Georgia will win the National Championship this season. However, he also said the Indiana’s Curt Cignetti is a better coach than him.
"Kirby (Smart) this, Kirby that," Stalions said ugawire.usatoday.com. "Look, I think Kirby’s elite and wins the natty this year if I had to put money on it. But Kirby’s the head coach at the University of Georgia at Athens. Curt’s (Cignetti) the head coach at Indiana Bloomington. We’re talking probably the best job in America (Georgia) in a vacuum vs the now 2nd losingest program in the history of college football."
Connor Stalions has faith in Georgia but isn’t as high on Kirby Smart
Out of all the coaches in college football, Cignetti is one of the few where there is a legit argument that he is a better coach than Smart. Indiana is one of the losingest programs in college football history, but in just two years he has taken the Hoosiers to the playoff twice and earned the 1-seed this year.
But is he actually better than Smart? At this point Cignetti has only won the Big Ten one time, Smart has won the SEC four times. Smart has also won two national titles while Cignetti hasn’t even made the semifinals of the playoff in his career at Indiana.
Cignetti is one of the best coaches in all of college football and he absolutely deserves the recognition he has been getting, but he is not on Smart’s level quite yet. Georgia and Indiana could meet in the championship game this season, and if he beat Smart then he would have a good argument for being the better coach.
