Former Georgia commit is reconsidering UGA

Can Georgia get Derrek Cooper back in their recruiting class?

One of the weirdest things that happened last summer on the recruiting trail for Georgia football was when a recruit committed to UGA to only decommit from the program four days later. It’s not uncommon for players to decommit from programs including Georgia, but to do it just four days after committing might be a record.

The player that did this was four-star running back Derrek Cooper. While this may seem like an indication that he no longer is interested in Georgia, that actually couldn’t be further from the truth as Cooper was just on campus last weekend for Kirby Smart’s second Junior Day of the year.

As mentioned, Cooper was in Athens this past weekend for Georgia’s Junior Day. And by all accounts this visit went extremely well.

In fact, Cooper sounds like one of the most popular recruits that was on campus this past weekend.

The best quote shared in the above post is that Cooper and his mom shared that this visit felt like “home” to them. That’s arguably the best feeling you can have when on a visit, so this is a great sign for Georgia in this recruitment.

Cooper’s mom also went on to say that this weekend’s visit was “different from all other visits.” Again, this is as good of a quote you could ever hope to receive from a player or their parent.

After reading all these great comments, no one will be surprised to find out that Georgia is one of the teams leading in Cooper’s recruitment. That’s at least how 247Sports sees it as Georgia is one of two teams (along with Miami) who are marked “warm” on Cooper’s 247Sports profile.

This will definitely be a recruitment to monitor going forward as Georgia has a great chance to get Cooper back in their recruiting class. And what a fun story that would be after he decommitted from Georgia after just four days.
