The transfer portal has been one of the most debated topics in college football since it was officially put in place a few years go. There are a lot of benefits to the transfer portal, but at the same time it is something that is not regulated and has hurt college football in many ways as well.
One of the reasons people aren’t fans of the transfer portal is because players have begun opting out of their season after a couple games to preserve their redshirt so they can transfer in the offseason. Players have opted out of bowl games for awhile now, which some would argue is a problem of its own, but this year more players are opting out of their season after two or three games so they can stay healthy and transfer in the offseason.
And one of those players who did that this season is former Georgia football defensive tackle Bear Alexander, who has officially entered the transfer portal.
USC DT Bear Alexander
Alexander spent his first season in college at Georgia, where he did not see the field much and only recorded nine tackles and two sacks in 2022. After that season, Alexander entered the transfer portal and made his move to USC, where he has been ever since.
Alexander had a great season in 2023 where he recorded 47 tackles for the Trojans, so the hype surrounding him heading into the 2024 season was very high. But after the Trojans’ third game of this season, he opted to sit the rest of the year to preserve his redshirt so he could transfer this offseason.
Kirby Smart and Georgia have not shown any interest in Alexander since entering the portal, and it’s unlikely they will after he left Georgia and did what he did to USC this season. But it will be interesting to see how other teams recruit him and if he gets a lot of interest from other programs in the portal or not.
