Georgia football has had a lot of great quarterbacks come through the program over the last few decades. Joe Cox however is one of the more forgotten players. He was a great Bulldog during his five year career in Athens, but he was quickly passed on the depth chart by Matthew Stafford and failed to see the field that much throughout his career.
However, every player is important to the program. So even though Cox didn't play very much he should still be supported throughout his coaching career wherever it takes him.
Former Georgia QB joins Lane Kiffin's staff at LSU
Cox has quickly risen up the coaching ranks over the last decade, and now he is heading to LSU to join Lane Kiffin as his co-Offensive Coordinator and tight ends coach.
Cox began his coaching career in 2015 as a graduate assistant at Colorado State. He then became the tight end coach there for multiple years before making the move to SEC football. He bounced around the league and held various positions before being named an Offensive Coordinator for the first time in 2024 at Ole Miss.
Cox spent the last two seasons at Ole Miss with Kiffin and will officially be following him to LSU.
LSU is going to be a serious threat to Georgia for as long as Kiffin is there. Cox will be a major problem for Georgia as well. It will be interesting to see if Kirby Smart ever tries to poach him from Kiffin so he can make his return to Georgia, but for now he is an enemy that UGA won't be able to ignore.
Georgia and LSU are scheduled to play in 2027, so that will be the first time that UGA gets to face Cox at LSU unless they both make it to the SEC Championship game next season. But even though he is with an SEC rival, it would still be nice to see Cox blossom into a great coach and have a very good career.
