Former Georgia star slammed as 'a turnover machine' by SEC insider

Miami football fans will have to accept the good with the bad from Carson Beck like Georgia had to.

While the Georgia Bulldogs usher in a new era under center with Gunner Stockton at quarterback, their former starter Carson Beck is back for one last ride down in Miami. He took this talents to Coral Gables for various reasons. Whether it be NIL, to be with his then-girlfriend, or to simply have one last shot at salvaging a once-promising pro career, Beck is now all about The U, for better or for worse...

Although Stockton may be well on his way to being a top-25 quarterback in the Power Four, Beck is a known commodity. It is why ESPN's Adam Rittenberg went to great lengths to get some scouting intel on 25 well-known Power Four passers, including Beck now at Miami. Rather than wasting our time listening to what Miami head coach Mario Cristobal had to say about him, let's hear from the scouts.

Let's just say that it is a mixed bag regarding Beck's evaluation heading into his sixth college season.

SEC coordinators know Carson Beck will turn the football over at will

One SEC defensive coordinator had mostly positive things to say about Beck's game at Georgia.

"He always played well against us, and I thought a lot of him. He maybe threw some balls he shouldn't have, but he was super talented and he has a lot of confidence. It'll be interesting [at Miami]."

On the other hand, another SEC coordinator was quick to call him rather careless with the football.

"He's a turnover machine,. There might have been some drops, but there might have been some dropped interceptions, too. The guy just throws it to the other team. He makes some good throws, but as a quarterback, that's tough to overcome. He was just fortunate how good they were on defense."

Beck turned the football over a ton last year at Georgia, as he was largely bailed out by his defense.

What kind of player are the Miami Hurricanes getting in Carson Beck?

While it is easy for many in Dawg Nation to dump on Beck some nine months since he broke up with Georgia, there are a few things he will do quite well now that he is playing in Shannon Dawson's system at Miami. Beck is never afraid to throw the football down the field. He does seem to thrive in winning time. While not an elite runner, he can move a little. His best trait above all else is confidence.

As for where he could get into trouble, Beck does not throw the most catchable ball. While he does throw the ball with some touch, it is often landing in and around his receivers' hands at weird angles. He may try to fit it into tight windows his good arm might not allow him to. Furthermore, he will forget where a ball-hawking linebacker or safety is in crucial parts of the game. His picks come in bunches.

Overall, there is a chance Beck is able to replicate the type of success former Washington State transfer Cam Ward had during his one season at Miami last year. Beck was a far better player than Ward was in 2023. This may really come down to Dawson's brilliance as a coach. The Mario Cristobal of it all will almost certainly hold the Canes back. Look for Beck to play like a lesser version of Ward.

Ultimately, Beck did more good for Georgia than bad. Keep in mind he only lost three of his starts over two years in Athens. Two of them were to Alabama, and the other was on the road to Ole Miss in the rain... While he never played in a playoff game, Beck did help get Georgia there last season, despite suffering a season-ending elbow injury vs. Texas. He helped make sure the Dawgs beat them twice.

Beck may be playing against lesser competition in the ACC, but he also will not have the same team.
