Are Georgia football fans not appreciating this past season enough? The Bulldogs finished the regular season at 10-2 which thankfully was just enough to qualify for the SEC Championship game. UGA then went on to beat Texas for the second time this season, claiming the SEC Championship behind backup QB Gunner Stockton.
This win earned Georgia the No. 2 overall seed in the College Football Playoff, which unfortunately didn’t help UGA as they lost their opening round game to Notre Dame.
One would think that all of these accomplishments would mean Georgia fans would be pretty happy with how the 2024 season played out, but that isn’t the case with every Georgia fan. And this is a fact that former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier recently pointed out.
"You’ve got some people out there saying Georgia didn’t have a good season, and that’s ridiculous," Spurrier shared in an interview with Dawgnation.
“Those (Georgia) fans need to appreciate Kirby (Smart)," Spurrier added after claiming Georgia fans didn’t appreciate the 2024 season.
It’s possible to be happy and disappointed at the same time
It's worth mentioning that a majority of Georgia fans are able to see the positives that came from this past season, but there are a handful of fans who are calling the 2024 season a disappointment. But if the majority of fans aren't jumping to call the season a disappointment, then it's not fair to put that label on the entire fanbase.
If there is a "correct" way to view the 2024 season, it's probably recognizing that Georgia did accomplish a lot and find a lot of success, but they still fell short of expectations and frankly didn't even come close to meeting them. That expectation Georgia fell short of is winning a National Championship, and the Bulldogs were three wins short of accomplishing that.
Sure winning 10 regular season games and winning an SEC Championship is very good, nobody is denying that, but it's okay to admit that Georgia did a lot of good this season while also recognizing the failures of the season at the same time. And it appears Spurrier isn't realizing that it's possible to be happy and disappointed at the same time.
