This past weekend was not a great for Georgia sports fans. Not only did the Bulldogs lose to Alabama in heartbreaking fashion, but the USA Ryder Cup Team lost to Team Europe in New York as well.
Some people might be asking how America's loss to Europe impacts Georgia fans, but when the US takes on any country (or continent) in an event of this magnitude, it's hard to not live and die with the American team.
Unfortunately the results in Georgia's game against Alabama and the Ryder Cup both went poorly. But to make matters even worse, there were four shocking similarities between the two events.
1. Embarrassingly slow starts
Both Georgia and the US got off too terribly slow starts. Everyone knows that Georgia trailed Alabama 14-0 before UGA even woke up, but the US got off to an even worse start by losing the first four of five sessions against the Europeans. This put the US so far behind that the final session on Sunday felt irrelevant.
But that couldn't have been further from the truth.
2. Failed comeback attempts
Georgia and the US Ryder Cup Team both stormed back to make their opposition sweat late in thir matchups. The Bulldogs were led by their dominant defense who gave up zero points in the second half, and the US nearly gave up zero points as well in the fifth and final session.
But Alabama and the Eruopeans were able to cling on to close victories thanks in large part to the great starts they both had. Europe was able to beat the US 15-13 while Alabama won 24-21, so the margin of defeat was nearly identical as well.
3. Losing as the home favorite
The US Ryder Cup Team and Georgia both played at home this past weekend. They were also favored to win as well as Georgia closed as 2.5 point favorites and the US had -150 odds to beat Europe before the first match on Friday.
Unfortunately neither team were able to win which ultimately is the only thing that truly matters. These losses also kept bad losing streaks in tact as Georgia is now 1-7 against Alabama in the Kirby Smart era and Europe has now won nine of the last 12 Ryder Cups.
4. Fear of what's to come
The bad news for both Georgia and the US Ryder Cup Team is that they both have to hit the road the next time they face their respective opponents. Georgia will head to Alabama next season while the US will take on Europe in the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor Golf Club in Ireland.
Winning on the road in both of these rivalries is next to impossible, so the future looks very bleak for both Georgia and the US.
It will be fun to see if both Georgia and the US are able to win on the road the next time they face these rivals, and hopefully they do because it would be nice to get some sweet revenge after how brutal this past weekend was.
