The College Football Playoff is only one year deep into their new 12-team format, but more changes appear to be on the horizon. The idea of further expansion beyond 12 teams has been floated around ever since the CFP agreed to move to 12 teams, but there was one big thing preventing this expansion.

The Big Ten was not happy that the SEC was continuing to play eight game conference schedules when they have been playing nine game conference schedules for a decade now. This difference was a huge blocker in the CFP expanding again, but the SEC announced earlier this week that they will start playing nine game conference seasons beginning in 2026.

The ACC has also shared in the past they would move to nine game conference schedules if the SEC did, so that move is likely to happen as well.

So now that the four power conferences are moving to nine game schedules, the CFP more than likely will expand to 16 teams. So what does this mean for Georgia?

Georgia should be thankful if the CFP expands to 16 teams

The powers at be in college football have until Dec. 1 to decide on future changes to the playoff, and at this point it feels inevitable that the playoff will expand to 16 teams. This format would automatically give the five highest ranked conference champions an automatic bid with the final 11 spots going to the highest ranked teams that didn't win their conference.

So why is this expansion good for Georgia?

If the top 16 teams make the playoff then that more than likely means Georgia will make the playoff every season. Just think about it, how often does Georgia finish outside the top 16 teams in the country? Under Kirby Smart that almost never happens.

While some college football fans are against expansion, Georgia fans should encourage it because the more teams allowed into the playoff means the less likely that UGA will ever be left out. So even in Georgia's down years they will still have a chance to win a National Championship.
