Georgia football cruised to a 35-14 victory against Kentucky Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs needed a win after dropping their first game of the season last week, and thankfully they were able to get back on track aginst the Wildcats.
Beating Kentucky may not feel significant as it's hard to take anything too positive away against a program like the Wildcats. But there was one thing in particular that Georgia should be extremely proud of, and that is the fact that they prevented Kentucky from scoring on their first drive of the game.
Georgia defense stands tall on opening drive against Kentucky
For the first time this season, Georgia held an SEC opponent scoreless on their first drive of the game when they forced a quick punt by Kentucky after five plays during their first drive.
Georgia's defense has had a lot of issues starting fast in their first two SEC games this season. The Bulldogs gave up a quick 21 points to Tennessee while also spotting Alabama 14 points as well. Both Tennessee and Alabama found the end zone on their opening drives as well which made life very difficult for Georgia going forward in each game.
Those slow defensive starts is one of the biggest reasons why Georgia lost to Alabama last week and why they were one play away from losing to the Volunteers as well.
But Georgia wasn't going to fall short this time. The Bulldogs did everything right on Kentucky's opening drive and immediately got off the field. This is exactly what UGA needed to do to set the tone in this game, and this perfect start is why they were able to cruise to an easy victory.
Georgia faces a tough Auburn squad on the road next week where it will be much more difficult to start this fast, but the Bulldogs have some confidence now so look for them to get off the field against the Tigers again next week on the first drive of the game.
