Potential College Football Playoff expansion has forced SEC leaders to debate making a drastic change to the SEC Championship game. The proposed change however may not be the best idea.

If the playoff moves to 16 teams there are a lot of people who would be in favor of eliminating the SEC title game altogether. Kirby Smart happens to be one of those people who has said that, and that was a bit surprising considering how much he loves playing in that game.

Now it’s Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks turn to weigh in on this discussion, and his idea may just be the worst of them all.

"I've been a proponent of maybe thinking outside the box a little bit if we were to go to 16, right?" Brooks said via 247sports.com. "I would be in favor of maybe the fifth-ranked SEC team playing the eighth-ranked team [and] the sixth- playing seventh-. That way five through eight get data points to show.

Georgia AD Josh Brooks has a horrible idea on what to do with the SEC Championship game

Brooks said that he would want the teams who finish 5-8 in the SEC standings to play an extra game during championship weekend instead of having the top two teams play in a traditional championship game. His thought process is that the top four teams in the conference likely would already done enough to make a 16-team playoff, so giving teams 5-8 another game could help them make their case to be in the playoff as well.

But what happens if the 4th best team in the SEC isn’t a lock to make the playoff? What if the SEC has a down year and the No. 4 team in the conference is 8-4? An 8-4 record wouldn’t be good enough to make a 16-team playoff, but in this scenario they wouldn’t have a chance to improve their resume.

So instead of having teams 5-8 play an extra game, why not have teams 1-4 do it instead? The top two teams could keep playing each other in the championship game while the No. 3 and No. 4 team could battle to improve their resume as well. Imagine how fun it would be to have these games back-to-back in Atlanta.

It’s only a matter of time until changes come to the playoff or the SEC Championship game. College football fans are worried that these changes could ruin the sport, but if Brooks’ idea is used then that could be the worst thing to happen to the conference in a long time.
