Georgia advances to Super Regional but not without suffering a major consequence

Georgia entered this weekend as the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and the host of the Athens Regional. After three hard fought games they are exiting regional play with a perfect 3-0 record to advance to the Super Regional.

Georgia will once again host this round of the NCAA Tournament next weekend which is a clear advantage for them. Unfortunately they will be without star infielder Tre Phelps who was controversially ejected during their 6-1 victory over Liberty Sunday night.

Tre Phelps ejection and subsequent suspension proves costly for Georgia in the Super Regional

Georgia's bats got off to an uncharacteristically slow start on Sunday. In the sixth inning the Bulldogs trailed Liberty 1-0, but then Phelps stepped up to the plate and crushed a ball over the left field fence.

His two-run home run gave Georgia their first lead of the game, so emotions were obviously very high as he rounded the bases. Before even reaching first base he made a celebratory gesture towards the Liberty dugout that earned him an immediate ejection.

It turns out that Phelps' parents were sitting directly behind the Liberty dugout though and that is who he was gesturing towards. But the home plate umpire had no idea and threw him out of the game.

NCAA rules require an ejected player to sit out for their next game, so Georgia will be forced to open up Super Regional play without Phelps who is one of their better players. This punishment would be understandable if Phelps had actually done something wrong, but the fact that he has to ride the bench because of an umpires mistake just isn't fair at this point in the season.

Georgia welcomes the chip on their shoulder after Tre Phelps ejection

There's a bit of poetic justice in this story because Phelps replacement, Michael O’Shaughnessy, stepped up and hit a home run of his own in the seventh inning during his fist at bat. It's unclear if he will replace Phelps in the starting lineup during their first game of the Super Regional, but if he does he will be plenty good enough to fill in.

Even though Georgia has plenty of talent to survive one game without Phelps, losing a future MLB player is not good during the NCAA Tournament. So far this season Phelps is batting an impressive .370 with 84 hits and 57 RBIs. He also has mashed 19 home runs this season as well.

On top of being a stellar bat for Georgia's offense, he is a remarkable defender as well. He has only had four errors all season and was especially electric in the infield all weekend long.

Georgia will host 14-seed Mississippi State this weekend in a best-of-three series. The Bulldogs swept Mississippi State on the road earlier this season and then beat them again in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.

It's safe to say that Mississippi State will enter this series with a massive chip on their shoulder, but so too will Georgia who will look to avenge Phelps' suspension by handling their business without him Friday night.
