Georgia not only survived their season opener but they thrived as they took down Tennessee State 63-3 in dominant fashion. Up next for Georgia is another fairly easy matchup against Western Kentucky, but Georgia can’t afford to sleepwalk into this game.
This matchup against Western Kentucky is an opportunity to get themselves right before the SEC season begins. It’s also another chance to preserve themselves and their future goals before the real season begins as well.
Georgia must avoid a close call against Western Kentucky
The absolute worst-case scenario for Georgia this weekend is a loss. That may be silly to even say, but there are points in the season where Georgia could lose a game without significantly damaging their season outlook.
Imagine if Georgia lost to Alabama or Ole Miss on the road later this season. That one loss wouldn’t destroy their hopes of winning a championship this season, but losing to Western Kentucky would. Georgia would still have every chance to win the SEC if they do lose this weekend, but the chances of that would feel slim. Their hopes of making the College Football Playoff though would probably rely on them running the table the rest of the season if they were to lose.
A close win wouldn’t be that great for Georgia’s resume either. When it came time to seed teams in the playoff a close win to Western Kentucky could give other teams an edge to jump them in seeding, so a close win could give Georgia a more difficult path in the playoff.
It’s unlikely that Georgia will lose or even have a close game against Western Kentucky, but crazy things happen ever week in college football and it’s important that Georgia isn’t involved in the wild game that will eventually happen this weekend.
Georgia should strive for more rest before their season ramps up
Georgia’s SEC slate begins the week after Western Kentucky and that feels like the true start to the Bulldogs’ season. In preparation for that it’s important Georgia remains as healthy as possible, and in order for that to happen they need their starters to get some rest.
Gorgia’s starters didn’t even finish the first half before the backups started coming in against Tennessee State. It wouldn’t be bad if they had to play a little longer this week, but it’d be nice for Gunner Stockton and the other starters to not have to play the entire game to avoid as many injuries as possible.
Extra time for Georgia’s backups to play is a great thing too as those reps will help their development for when they are inevitably needed later in the season.
Vegas oddsmakers favor Georgia by 40.5 points in this matchup and all signs are pointing to a dominant victory. Georgia still has to show up and earn that big win that is expected of them, and with the difficult schedule they will face in the SEC one more easy win would be a nice way to continue their season in week two.
