Georgia's win over Alabama combined with Texas' loss to Oklahoma has officially moved Georgia up to No. 1 in the latest AP Poll rankings. This decision from the voters was not surprising, but what is surprising is that Georgia didn't receive every first place vote.
70 media members vote on the AP Poll this year, and Georgia only earned 66 first place votes which means there are four voters out there who don't have Georgia at No. 1. In fact, one of these four voters actually had Georgia at No. 3 in their AP Poll.
Georgia still has to win a handful of AP voters over
The only thing that matters when it comes to the AP Poll is what Georgia's overall ranking is. The AP Poll has Georgia as the overwhelming No. 1 team in the country, but they are missing four first place votes from being a unanimous No. 1 team.
Notre Dame came in at No. 2 in this week's AP Poll and they earned one first place vote. Miami at No. 3 earned two first place votes with No. 5 Indiana earning the final first place vote.
All three of these teams being voted above Georgia doesn't make a lot of sense. Notre Dame and Miami do not have a ranked win yet this season, and the only ranked win Indiana has was when they narrowly beat Northwestern who is currently No. 25 in the country. None of these team have a win that even comes close to Georgia's victory over Alabama. On top of that Georgia also won their five other games by at least 24 points.
Who knows why these four voters don't agree that Georgia is No. 1, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter all that much.
Georgia's SEC Championship hopes rest on two games
Georgia is the last undefeated team remaining in the SEC. This puts them in a great position to make it to the SEC Championship game, but they still have some work to do to get there. Their schedule sets them up quite nicely though to get to Atlanta.
Georgia has five games left in conference play, and three of them are against unranked opponents. Those three opponents are Auburn who Georgia plays this weekend at home, Florida who has hit rock bottom the last two weeks and South Carolina. As of now those look like three easy wins and if Georgia wants to make the SEC title game winning these three games is critical.
Georgia's two other conference games this season are against No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 13 Missouri. Georgia has to travel to Ole Miss when they play the Rebels, and combining that with how successful quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has been against Georgia makes that the most likely loss on Georgia's schedule. Then there is Missouri who is one of the hottest teams in the conference, but Georgia thankfully gets them at home.
The feeling is that Georgia's hopes of making it to Atlanta rest on these two games. As long as they win their three easier games Georgia could go 1-1 against Ole Miss and Missouri and most likely make it to Atlanta.
The goal at Georgia is to win every game they play though, but their win at Alabama gave them some breathing room in their quest to win the SEC.
