Georgia baseball just had one of their best regular seasons in program history. The Bulldogs didn't win the SEC regular season championship and they also lost their first game of the SEC Tournament, but that doesn't take away from how hot this team was entering the NCAA Tournament.
Georgia entered the NCAA Tournament with an impressive 42-15 record after going 18-12 in SEC play. With how strong the SEC is in baseball every single season, this record was about as good as it can realisitcally get.
Georgia was rewarded for this impressive season by earning the No. 7 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. This meant they got to host Regionals this weekend and would also host Super Regionals next weekend if they advanced.
Unfortunately things did not go their way this weekend as the Bulldogs season was cut short after losing back to back games to No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Oklahoma State.
Georgia embarrassed by Oklahoma State in final game of the season
Sunday afternoon's game got off to a rocky start as Oklahoma State jumped on the Bulldogs in the first two innings. The Cowboys took a 3-0 lead heading into the third inning, but this is when Georgia's bats finally woke up.
Georgia scored five runs in the third inning and followed that up with one run in the fourth and fifth inning to take a commanding 7-3 lead. But Oklahoma State responded with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game 7-7.
Georgia responded by scoring one run in the seventh and eighth innings, but a four-run ninth inning by the Cowboys, which was capped off by a two-run walk off home run, propelled the Cowboys past Georgia.
So what was a great season for UGA ended in disaster as they failed to reach the Regional Final as the host school. Even though there is a lot to be proud of from the regular season, those accomplishments no longer matter after this disappointing showing in the NCAA Tournament.
Oklahoma State will advance to the Regional Final where they will play Duke. The Blue Devils only need one win to advance to the Super Regional while the Cowboys will have to beat Duke twice to advance.
