Georgia basketball is officially in position to make the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs were on the outside looking in as they entered their Tuesday night matchup with rival Florida, but their 88-83 upset win over the No. 3 Gators changed the trajectory of their season.
Mike White and the Bulldogs had a disappointing 16-11 record and 4-10 mark in SEC play entering this game. But that changed in a hurry when Georgia earned the best win of their season against the Gators.
As it stands today, Georgia is not a lock to make the NCAA Tournament, but they are squarely on the bubble which isn’t a bad place to be considering UGA hasn’t made the Big Dance since 2015. But Georgia needs to win a few more games to feel good about their chances, but that is a tall ask in the SEC.
The SEC has a whopping eight teams in the AP Poll’s top 25, which includes four teams in the top six. That means Georgia almost always has a tough team to face up next on their schedule. But with just three games remaining in the regular season, the exact opposite is true.
Georgia’s easy finish to their schedule
Georgia’s next two games are both on the road, with the Bulldogs traveling to Texas this weekend before heading to South Carolina on Tuesday. Georgia then has their regular season finale at home against Vanderbilt. All three of these teams are unranked, and they are also below .500 in SEC play.
So what does this mean for Georgia? This means that UGA has a great chance to finish the season strong and earn their spot in the NCAA Tournament.
But how good of a finish does Georgia need to have to feel good about making the Big Dance? A 3-0 record would guarantee their spot in the NCAA Tournament, and a 2-1 record would give Georgia a great chance too. Anything worse than that and the Bulldogs will need to make a run in the SEC Tournament.
So the hope is that Georgia finishes strong so there isn’t any pressure heading into the SEC Tournament. It won’t be easy to finish the regular season with a few wins, but UGA’s schedule gives them a good chance to clinch their spot in the NCAA Tournament in these final three games.
