Georgia's best player hitting the transfer portal is a terrible look for Mike White

It seemed to be heading this way, but it does not make things any better for the Georgia Bulldogs.

After only one season in Athens, it seems as though Jeremiah Wilkinson will be playing for a third college basketball team in as many years. The Powder Springs native and former Cal guard intends to enter the transfer portal once it opens up next week. He appears to be the second Georgia player hitting the portal in the wake of rotational front-court player Dylan James announcing his intentions.

Wilkinson let it be known his plans of hitting the transfer portal a second time on Monday afternoon.

In his lone season at Georgia, Wilkinson average a team-high 17.4 points per game, as well as 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest. The sophomore guard out of McEachern was removed from the starting lineup in lieu of Marcus Millender getting the starting nod after his late-season injury. While this did help Georgia win 20-plus games and make the NCAA Tournament, they lost anyway...

Wilkinson did not beat around the bush when it came to how he felt after the awful Saint Louis loss.

Mike White is struggling to retain his team's best scorers at Georgia

For the second straight year, it looks like Georgia will be losing its top-scoring threat to the transfer portal. Silas Demary Jr. left Athens for UConn this past offseason. He played a huge part in the Huskies overcoming a massive deficit to defeat the Duke Blue Devils in their Elite Eight game on Sunday. It is not everything, but this cannot be merely a coincidence for Mike White at the helm of it.

Under White, we have seen Georgia go from an SEC bottom-feeder, to a team that can regularly win 20-plus games a season and make the NCAA Tournament annually. For years, Dawg Nation would have begged for that to be its basketball team's reality. At this time, it is not that they have gotten greedy, but are hoping the team can take the crucial next step. Right now, this team is stagnating...

Overall, Wilkinson hitting the portal may not be surprising, but that does not mean it does not hurt any less. For years, many of the state's best basketball players have gone elsewhere for their college basketball careers. With Auburn reeling and Georgia Tech way down, Georgia should be able to take advantage of this. While it has to some degree under White, losing Wilkinson after one year is awful.

For now, we must wait and see where Wilkinson takes his scoring talents to ahead of his junior year.
