After though it is the heart of college football season, something rather interesting happened on the college basketball front in the SEC. Former Florida Gators head coach Mike White got a multi-year extension with his current team in the Georgia Bulldogs. While White did beat his former school last year to help the Dawgs make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in years, Florida just won it all.
Naturally, Florida fans are loving the fact that White got extended through 2031. Frankly, they needed a win after how this football season is going for them... Billy Napier has gone 1-3 so far, and may not lead the Gators to another victory on the year, assuming he is not let go before the end of it. For now, Florida is a basketball school, while Georgia is aiming to diversify its football-heavy sports portfolio.
From a Georgia perspective, its fans have mixed reviews about White getting extended through 2031.
Here to stay ‼️

As far as Florida fans are concerned, they are doing cartwheels in the streets over this big move.
Georgia fans are overwhelmed by Florida fans over Mike White extension
As you can see by the replies to Georgia Basketball's post over on X, Florida fans are really loving this.
6 years of middle of the SEC finishes & 1st round loses in the tourney. Couldn't happen to a better fan base. Thanks for taking him off our hands 🤣😂

That one win over Florida where he needed a last minute rally because he blew a 30 point lead was something special, good job coach 🔥

And again, Florida has its reasons for all this. White left Gainesville to take over in Athens only four offseasons ago. Under Golden, the Gators have won their first national championship since the Billy Donovan years. Truth be told, Florida has always been a better basketball program than Georgia. That being said, White has not completely devolved into Napier on the hardwood, but he very well could...
In a very interesting way, this is a move that both Florida and Georgia fans can actually view positively.
Why Mike White could become Georgia's version of Billy Napier
It is kind of like comparing apples to oranges, but not really... Florida got itself into trouble by giving Napier a vote of confidence down the stretch last year. Yes, Florida played very well during the second half of its season. However, none of that positive momentum has manifested into anything of quality so far this year. Again, every year is different, so what is exactly is Georgia paying White for?
This is not meant to disparage White, but is Georgia not celebrating mediocrity here by way of this extension? Then again, maybe occasionally making the NCAA Tournament is as good as it gets for this current iteration of Georgia hoops... In truth, White is getting extended on the belief that he can help the Bulldogs take the next step. The only problem is that next step is not akin to what Golden did.
In the end, when expectations exceed outcomes, you end up with disappointment. Georgia must enter the next year or two under White with cautious optimism. However, Florida and the rest of Golden's staff can drop a ring on the table and say if you come play at Florida, you can have one of these. Florida cannot do that on the football field with Napier, just like Georgia cannot with White now.
Last year was a great successful for Georgia basketball standards, but let's not forget who they are.
