Stetson Bennett is continuing to push for the backup quarterback job with the Rams, and all signs at practice this week point to him still leading for that job. That isn't the only quarterback battle Georgia fans will want to pay attention to though because Kirby Smart opened up about a new QB battle taking place in Athens too.
Bennett's battle with Ty Simpson has been one of the biggest talking points in the NFL throughout training camp though, so let's begin there and see how things are unfolding out west.
Stetson Bennett takes the next step to becoming Rams’ backup
Stetson Bennett shined with the Rams during their second preseason game last weekend. Fast forward to this week and he is still getting reps in practice before rookie quarterback Ty Simpson.
The Rams haven't made a final decision about who their backup will be quite yet, but throughout training camp Bennett has been the starter in the preseason and has gotten reps in practice before Simpson. Those are two signs that he is leading the competition and the most likely candidate to be No. 2 on the depth chart this year.
The Rams have one more preseason game on Thursday. They are still debating if Bennett will play or not, but if the Rams keep him sidelined for the entire game that could be the greatest sign of all that he is likely to win their backup job because the Rams would be keeping him on the bench to preserve his health.
Kirby Smart said a quarterback battle could occur during the regular season
Gunner Stockton will be Georgia's starting quarterback this season no matter what. The competition to be his backup though is still ongoing.
Ryan Puglisi was expected to be his backup since he was last season, but redshirt freshman Ryan Montgomery has been playing well in fall camp and is pushing him for that spot. Kirby Smart confirmed on Tuesday that this competition is still taking place and that this battle could continue into the regular season.
Georgia begins their season with two easy home games against Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. They most likely will win these games with ease, and once they're up by a wide margin Smart will pull his starters like he typically does and put the backups in. This is when both Puglisi and Montgomery could get a chance to play to try and win the backup job.
This battle won't impact things too much this season unless Gunner Stockton gets hurt, but the winner of this competition will show who the favorite is to be the starting quarterback next season after Stockton's departure.
Former Bulldog JaCorey Thomas plans his return to college football
JaCorey Thomas is a former Georgia defensive back who turned pro this offseason. He was not drafted, but he participated in a minicamp with the Carolina Panthers that ultimately went nowhere.
Thomas is suing for another year of college eligibility now, but he has made it clear that he does not want to return to Georgia. That however is more than fine with Kirby Smart because he just said he has no interest in bringing NFL players back to Georgia and the SEC released a statement Tuesday night informing all 16 conference teams that they aren't allowed to do this as well.
Thomas will still attempt to get one more year of college football, but he won't be playing at Georgia, anywhere in the SEC, or even in the Big Ten who released a similar statement to the SEC this week.
